Uni.1 Understanding Literature though verse

   Poem.1

My mistress ^ eyes are nothing like the sun

- By Wiliam Shakespeare

Introduction:-

William Shakespeare April 1564- 23 April was an English playwright, poet and actor. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England National poet and the " Bard of Avon " ( or simply " the Bard " ). His extant works, including collaboration, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems and a few other major living language and are perfomed more often than those of any other playwright.and his works continue to be studied and reinterpreted.

      Summary :-

This sonnet the speakers^s lover to a number of other beauties-and never in the lover's favor. Hee eyes ane " nothing like the sun" her lips are less red than coral; compared to white snow, her breasts are dun-colored l, and her hairs are like black wires on her head. In the second quatrain, the speaker says he has seen roses separated by color ( " damasked") into red and white, but he sees no much roses in his mistress 'A' cheeks; and he says the breath that "  reeks " from his mistress is less delightful. In the third quatrain, he admits that, thought he loves her voice l, music, " hath a fat more pleasing sound",and that beloveds are.he employs some of the most comman comparisons that werw used by the sonneteers and points out the fact thay it is not humanly possible to reach that level.

How can someone's breath be more delightful than the smell of perfumes.? How can someone's breasts be as snow.? How can someone's vioce be sweeter than music.? How can someone's walk mathc of goddesses.? The speaker question the conversation depiction of beauty by asking these questions and negatives them by saying thay his mistress' s beauty is not of this level.he declares that all those people that describes their beloveds beuty are liars.

This satire not only points out the idealism in poetry but also in all the fields of life. It shows that ideal wishes can never be fulfilled in this world.humans should ready themselves to accept the world as it is with all its imperfecctions.

Conclusion:-

Love of beauty

Though he has never seen a goddess, his mistress - unlike goddesses walks on the ground. In then couplet, however the speaker declares that, by heav'n " he thinks his love as tare and valuable" As any she belied with false compare "- that any love in which false comparisons were invokef to describe the loved one's beauty.

Analysis :-

Shakespeare’s joke:

In this sonnet, Shakespeare makes fun of the usual style of love poetry in his time. Poets often praised women with exaggerated comparisons (eyes like the sun, lips as red as coral, skin as white as snow, etc.). These comparisons sound nice, but if taken literally, they are silly.

Against old style (Petrarch’s sonnets):

Earlier poets, like Petrarch, always described women as perfect and goddess-like. Shakespeare does the opposite. He writes about a woman who is not perfect. For example, her eyes are not like the sun, her lips are not super red, her cheeks are not roses, and her breath does not smell like perfume.

True meaning:

Shakespeare shows that real love does not need fake or extreme comparisons. A woman does not need to look like flowers or the sun to be beautiful. Love is real even without these false praises.

Structure of the poem:

The first 4 lines (quatrain 1) → one comparison each (eyes, lips, breasts, hair).

The next 4 lines (quatrain 2) → continues with comparisons (roses, breath, voice).

The next 4 lines (quatrain 3) → more comparisons (walking, goddess idea).

The last 2 lines (couplet) → the poet’s true point: his love is rare and real, even without fancy words.

THEMES OF SONNET 130:-

In Shakespeare’s time, poets often described their lovers in an exaggerated and unrealistic way.

Example: saying her lips are "redder than coral" or her hair is "like gold."

Shakespeare makes fun of this style. He describes his lover in a realistic way—not perfect, not like the impossible comparisons used by other poets.

He shows that it is not possible for anyone to be as perfect as those ideal images.

For example, he questions:

Can breath smell better than perfume?

Can skin be whiter than snow?

Can lips be redder than coral?

Can hair really shine like gold wires?

Can someone’s voice be sweeter than music?

Can someone’s walk be like a goddess?

His answer: No. Real people are not like that.

He says those poets who describe such beauty are actually lying.

The Main Idea

Shakespeare wants us to accept real beauty with all its imperfections.

This poem teaches that real love is based on truth, not fake comparisons

What is litrature.....

A literature essay is a type of essay in English where you write about a story, poem, play, or novel. In this kind of essay, you do not just tell the story, but you explain, analyze, and give your opinion about it.

Here is a long explanation for you:

A literature essay is a piece of writing that studies and discusses works of literature such as novels, short stories, plays, or poems. It is not only about summarizing the story but also about exploring its deeper meaning. In a literature essay, the writer looks at the themes, characters, style, language, and ideas of the text. The main aim is to show how the author expresses thoughts and what message the text gives to readers.

For example:

If you are writing about Shakespeare’s Sonnet 130, you might explain how he describes his beloved in a realistic way instead of using false comparisons.

If you are writing about a novel, you may discuss how the main character changes during the story or what lesson the book teaches.

A good literature essay usually has:

Introduction – introduces the work of literature and the main idea of your essay.

Body paragraphs – explain points with examples, quotations, and analysis.

Conclusion – sums up your thoughts and shows the importance of the work.
